Picture of the month: Bat seeks lodgings…
Bechstein's bats work as a team to find new roosts
Bechstein's bats are fond of a change of scenery. In the course of a single summer colonies of these nocturnal mammals may move home anything up to 50 times. Every day before dawn the 20 to 40 bats that live together in a group have to have agreed on a roosting place in which to spend the day. Now researchers working with Gerald Kerth at the University of Zurich have discovered that as part of this process the bats share information about newly discovered roosts. These findings could make it easier to protect this endangered species, of which there are only two known colonies in Switzerland. By exchanging information the animals are evidently able to find new potential roosts within a very short time.
