The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) was established in 1952 as a foundation under private law. Its supreme body is the Foundation Council which includes representatives from the scientific community, confederation, cantons and economic and cultural sectors.
The National Research Council of the SNSF is made up of four divisions and three specialised committees. Its tasks are the evaluation of research projects and the awarding of grants.
The SNSF Research Commissions, based at Swiss universities, endorse grants for young scientists and aid the SNSF in the evaluation of funding applications.
The administrative offices, located in Berne, are responsible for all administrative and financial concerns as well as preparing the business agendas for the National Foundation and the Research Council.
