CMF operations is very difficult because there is little room for surgical instruments. The surgeon has to work with great precision so as not to damage nerves and blood vessels during the operation.
Based on a new planning and navigating platform, researchers of NCCR "CO-ME" have developed a system that allows surgeons to better plan operations with the help of simulations. During an operation, the system directs a small robot exactly to the place where it can laser-cut through bone. This enables surgeons to execute complex CMF surgery with more precision and improved safety.
The technology is also suited to other invasive operations, for example in neurosurgery. The researchers have developed it in collaboration with Advanced Osteotomy Tools (AOT) AG, a start-up company that emerged from NCCR "CO-ME". The project is one of 28 projects which got underway in autumn 2009 in the context of federal measures for the stabilisation of the Swiss economy.
The researchers are presenting the new planning and navigating platform at the world’s largest trade fair which takes place in Hannover from 4 to 8 April 2011.
