Three NCCRs organise science workshops at the "Hérisson sous gazon" festival for children

On Saturday, 18 June 2011, the festival for children "Hérisson sous gazon" will take place in Charrat (Valais). The three National Centres of Competence in Research (NCCRs) "IM2", "Affective Sciences" and "MaNEP" will participate with science workshops for children. Their topics being smells, robots and a levitating scooter.

At a science workshop, children discover the laws of electricity by playful means.

As in the previous year, NCCR "IM2" will present the humanoid robot NAO, who interacts with children. This stimulates discussions about speech recognition, vocal synthesis and spatial analysis. NCCR "MaNEP" will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of superconductivity by displaying one of its most specatcular effects: magnetic levitation. NCCR "Affective Sciences" will invite children to name different smells either freely or by showing them a picture representing the smell. This demonstrates the importance of vision in olfactory recognition.
