SNSF: Changes to terminology, classification and website

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has renamed certain divisions within its Administrative Offices as well as one of its specialised committees. Furthermore, it has reclassified its funding schemes and made the corresponding changes on its website. Finally, the SNSF has published online new guidelines and descriptions to help researchers in selecting an appropriate funding scheme.

The SNSF has renamed three divisions within the Administrative Offices:

• Targeted Research division - new: Programmes division
• Individual Funding division - new: Careers division
• Press and Information Office - new: Communication division

One specialised committee of the National Research Council has been renamed:

• Specialised Committee Individual Funding - new: Specialised Committee Careers

Furthermore, the SNSF has reclassified its funding schemes, which will be assigned to the following five categories in future:

• Projects (basic research, whether use-inspired or not; researchers are free in their choice of research topic)
• Careers (fellowships, Ambizione, SNSF professorships, MHV programme etc.)
• Programmes (with pre-defined topics and formal/organisational requirements): NRPs, NCCRs, Sinergia, international programmes, special programmes for biology and medicine etc.)
• Infrastructures
• Science communication (conferences, publications, Agora)

The new classification is also reflected in the changes made under "Funding" on the SNSF website (see "On this subject")

New guidelines and descriptions
The SNSF offers a wide range of research funding schemes that are not well known to prospective applicants. To provide better support for researchers, the SNSF has published new guidelines for the selection of funding schemes and - for project funding - new guidelines for applicants and a description of the evaluation procedure (see "On this subject").
