Medical technology research on a firm footing in Switzerland

The National Centre of Competence (NCCR) "CO-ME - Computer Aided and Image Guided Medical Interventions" has founded the Swiss Institute for Computer Assisted Surgery (Sicas) in order to be able to maintain and develop its network even after the conclusion of the NCCR in 2013.

Sicas (Swiss Institute for Computer Assisted Surgery) is the fruit of a joint initiative undertaken by NCCR "CO-ME" and Creapole, the technology innovation agency of the canton of Jura. It is a platform which researchers in the area of medical technology and translational medicine, doctors at hospitals and medical technology companies can use for networking purposes. In the offices in Delémont there is room for the network partners from Switzerland and abroad to meet and hold events. Sicas will gradually take over the role of the current NCCR "CO-ME", which will come to an end in June 2013.

An inside view of the institute

On 20 October 2011, Sicas will introduce itself to the public on the occasion of the "Medtech Process Day". The event will feature talks by Patrick Aebischer, president of the EPFL, Lutz Nolte, head of medtech at the Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI), Bernhard Reber, future director of Sicas, and researchers from NCCR "CO-ME". The event will be accompanied by an exhibition where visitors can watch medical technology in action through simulated operations and get to know some start-up companies that have emerged out of NCCR "CO-ME".
