Exchange Programmes

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) has concluded exchange programme agreements with some countries. These agreements with partner organisations abroad provide a basis for international cooperation. As a result, scientists can conduct research abroad for a limited period, or a Swiss institution can host a researcher from abroad.

In Switzerland, scientists are required to contact the SNSF, and their colleagues abroad are required to contact the SNSF partner organisation in their country. Research visits can last up to 12 months depending on the agreement.

General application requirements:

  • doctorate;
  • research activities;
  • Swiss nationality, residence or settlement permit;
  • no age limit (depending on the agreement).

Cooperation agreements exist with the following organisations and countries:

  • Italy – Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR)
    Short visits of up to 3 months in all disciplines.
  • China – National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC)
    Grants for up to 12 months in mathematics, natural and engineering sciences, biology and basic medical research.
  • South Korea – Korean Science and Engineering Foundation (KOSEF)
    Grants for up to 12 months and short visits of up to 3 months in natural and engineering sciences.
  • Japan – Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS)
    Grants for up to 12 months and short stays of up to 3 months in all disciplines. There is also a funding programme specific to the JSPS called the “Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers”. Before submitting an application, candidates are required to contact the SNSF in order to obtain the information and documentation for each programme.

Submission of applications: in principal, at least 4 months before the anticipated start of the grant.

Applications must be written in English, including appendices.
