Scientific conferences

The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) provides funding for scientific conferences if these are of obvious interest to the Swiss research community.

Conference funding is mainly intended to cover travel and accommodation expenses for guest speakers from abroad. The conference venues must be in Switzerland. Exceptionally, the SNSF can support scientific conferences abroad if they take place at a Swiss research institute which is officially accredited and subsidised by the Swiss Confederation (e.g. Instituto Svizzero di Roma).

Please note: specific SNSF grants may also be awarded to conference participants from Eastern Europe, who are supported under the SCOPES programme (SCOPES conference grants – see under “On this subject”).

Requirements for the application submission and reports

Applications for scientific conferences must contain the following information and documents:

- scientific programme;

- names of the designated speakers as well as their country of origin
  and their qualifications; please justify if an adequate participation
  of women cannot be achieved;

- information about the expected circle of participants;

- detailed budget for the conference.

After the conference, a scientific and a financial report must be submitted to SNSF.

Deadlines

Applications for conference grants are not subject to a deadline. However, organisers must submit their application electronically via mySNF at least 6 month prior to the date of the planned event.

Applicants have to sign in as users at mySNF early, in order to get their personal mySNF access authorisation in time. User accounts are not limited in time and give access to all funding instruments. Already registered users have ongoing acces.

Applicants can find further information on SNSF's scientific conference grants in the Grant Regulations of SNSF (article 22 to 25a and article 46) as well as in the General Implementation Regulations to the Grant Regulations (No. 4).
