Please find below a non-exhaustive list of funding opportunities for international collaboration. Funding instruments that are open for Europe only can be found under Europe -> Further funding
SNSF funding initiatives:
Fellowships for prospective and advanced researchers
With the fellowships for prospective and advanced researchers, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) offers young scientists the opportunity to stay at a research institution abroad.
Sinergia
Sinergia aims to enable collaborative projects. Research groups may be based at various universities or research centres in Switzerland. One of the research groups may be located in another country if its expertise appears essential to the project and if no other group in Switzerland can provide the required expertise.
Other funding initiatives:
International Foundation for Science (IFS)
The objective of the IFS is to support developing countries in managing their natural resources in a sustainable way. It helps to reinforce the research capacity in these countries and to finance excellent research that is relevant to the mission of IFS. The activities focus especially on the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology); however, social and economic aspects, which are important for the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources, are also taken into account.
Bilateral Research Co-operation Programme (Leading House initiative)
The Bilateral Research Co-operation Programme is designed to provide the best possible scientific quality and is intended to promote long-term partnerships with a number of specifically defined countries.
The State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER) is responsible for the Bilateral Research Co-operation Programme. For co-operation with every partner country, a Swiss university and corresponding institution in the partner country are also assigned to act as Leading Houses.
Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries (KFPE)
The KFPE is engaged in Swiss research policy and is committed to the promotion of the interests of researchers and their affiliated institutions on both a national and international level. It promotes development-oriented research.
Applications for funding may be submitted within the framework of "Echanges Universitaires", funded by Swiss Agency for Development and Co-operation (SDC).
Rectors' Conference of the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences (KFH)
The programme “Research Collaboration with Developing and Transition Countries” promotes international opening and co-operation. It supports universities of applied sciences (UAS) and universities of teacher education (UTE) working in co-operation with developing and transition countries on projects involving applied research and development.
Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS)
The Swiss government awards a range of scholarships to foreign students through the FCS. These scholarships provide graduates from all disciplines with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies or research in Switzerland at a publicly funded university or recognised institution.
Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP)
The HFSP supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on problems at the frontier of the life sciences. A clear emphasis is placed on new collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering.
Research collaborations as well as fellowships for young scientists are provided for researchers coming from or going to member countries.
European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)
The EDCTP was created in 2003 as a European response to the global health crisis caused by the three main poverty-related diseases of HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. EDCTP aims to accelerate the development of new or improved drugs, vaccines and microbicides against these diseases, with a focus on phase II and III clinical trials in sub-Saharan Africa by supporting multicentre projects which combine clinical trials, capacity building and networking.
