The joint SNSF-SDC programme for research on global issues in and with developing and emerging countries will support projects generating knowledge and innovative solutions in Africa, Asia and Latin America as of 2012.
The aim of the programme is to develop new insights and innovative solutions and to make them available, with the objective of fostering a sustainable global development which targets poverty reduction and the preservation of global public goods in developing countries. The partnership is geared towards excellence, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. Research is divided into two modules: the first comprises five pre-defined research fields, the second is not bound to any specific topic.
Five main topics
- Reducing poverty through employment as well as favourable societal and state-related framework conditions;
- Causes of and solutions to social conflicts in the context of weak public institutions;
- Agricultural production systems and food security;
- Sustainable use and management of ecosystems;
- Provision systems and financing mechanisms in the public health sector.
For each of these themes, some CHF 2.2 million will be made available every year for research, scientific syntheses and implementation measures. In the same manner, some CHF 2.2 million per year have been earmarked for freely chosen thematic research. Three-fourths of the overall financial volume of CHF 100 million for an eight-year period will be contributed by the SDC, one-fourth by the SNSF.
Sequenced calls for proposals
A series of calls for proposals on the five research themes will be issued in combination with the calls for projects without thematic specifications.
