The National Research Programme "Pathogenesis of novel forms of infectious diseases" (NRP 38+) aimed to intensify the support of research on prion- and HIV-associated diseases. The stimulation of the interchange of ideas and the support of new roads to be travelled in scientific research should help to keep the high standard of Swiss scientific research in these diseases.
