Digital Percival, St. Gallen missives and Robert Walser - Editions in the humanities

Editions provide access to historical documents and make them available to further research. They cover everything from correspondence between interesting historical figures to legal sources to entire literary oeuvres. Between 2017-2020, the SNSF supported 23 large-scale edition projects within the scope of its realigned infrastructure funding. It invested 23 million francs in this endeavour.

The SNSF will keep on funding editions in line with the new orientation during the 2021-2024 period:

  • Nine of the editions financed until now will continue to be funded by the SNSF. They have either a funding period of up to ten years or will be completed during the 2021-2024 period. To this end, the National Research Council approved funding worth 7 million francs in autumn 2020.
  • For eight long-term editions, the Swiss Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences (SAHS) has assumed responsibility. It will support these editions with 13 million francs, which will be transferred to SAHS from the SNSF budget.

In addition, the SNSF funds edition research projects that last up to four years. The money generally goes to doctoral students or postdocs who are working on a dissertation or habilitation. Project leaders can submit applications by 1 April or 1 October to the SNSF's project funding scheme provided they meet the relevant requirements.
