The State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) is reviewing the Swiss Roadmap for Research Infrastructures. The latter is used to register newly planned research infrastructures of national importance and contains records of already existing research infrastructures. The Roadmap serves as a basis for financial decisions in the scope of the 2021-2024 ERI Dispatch.
There is a growing need for research infrastructures in Switzerland and, correspondingly, a need for more financial resources. Particularly large-scale projects of national or international importance require medium- to long-term planning to ensure that the limited financial resources are used as efficiently and effectively as possible, and to optimally position Swiss science and innovation.
In a first step, swissuniversities and the ETH Board identified planned new research infrastructures of national and international importance in areas under their remit. The SERI has asked the SNSF to scientifically evaluate the research infrastructure projects shortlisted by the two above-mentioned bodies.
Based on the results of the SNSF evaluation process, the responsible bodies will undertake a comprehensive feasibility and funding assessment in the ERI period 2021-2024 (2nd half of 2018). The funding decisions are the responsibility of the Swiss Confederation and will be made in the scope of the ERI Dispatch 2021-2024.
