Lead Agency process with Belgium (Wallonia - Brussels Federation)

Under the Lead Agency process, a joint application by researchers in Switzerland and the French-speaking part of Belgium can be submitted to one of the two research funding organisations. The submission process is governed by the provisions in force at the relevant organisation.

At the Fonds de la recherche scientifique - FNRS (F.R.S.-FNRS), the Lead Agency process is limited to the funding scheme Projet de recherches (PDR).

You can submit projects in collaboration with researchers from the following universities:

  • Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain)
  • Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)
  • Université de Liège (ULiège)
  • Université de Mons (UMons)
  • Université de Namur (UNamur)
  • Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles (USL-B)

The latest version of the rules and regulations of the PDR instrument on the F.R.S-FNRS website.

In both countries the maximum project duration is 4 years.

With a success rate of approximately 25 per cent, the F.R.S.-FNRS rate is considerably lower than the SNSF rate.

Submission: The SNSF and the F.R.S.-FNRS have agreed to take turns as the Lead Agency on a yearly basis. The next submission is possible in 2021.

The F.R.S.-FNRS stipulates that Belgian researchers whose application was approved in 2020 must start their project in January 2021. Even though the Swiss partners are allowed to choose their own starting date within a year of the funding decision, the SNSF recommends that the different research groups coordinate the starting phase.

If you are planning to submit your Lead Agency proposal in a language other than English (only possible in certain disciplines of the humanities and social sciences), you will need to discuss this with all of the involved agencies in advance.
