Lead Agency process with South Africa

Under the Lead Agency process, a joint application by researchers in Switzerland and South Africa can be submitted to one of the two national research funding organisations. The submission process is governed by the provisions in force at the relevant organisation.

At the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Lead Agency process is open for funding researchers/ scientists residing in South Africa and affiliated with a recognised South African public higher education or research institution such as a university, university of technology or science council.

In both countries the maximum project duration is 3 years.

The two funding agencies apply their respective success rates.

All applications must be in English.

Submission: The SNSF and the NRF have agreed to alternate as the Lead Agency on a yearly basis. In 2021, the SNSF will have the role of Lead Agency.

Deadline for submission: 1 April 2021 at 17.00 at the SNSF.

When the SNSF is the Lead Agency, South African applicants must also submit the application at the NRF.

If you submit an application under the Lead Agency process to a foreign partner organization which serves as Lead Agency, you have to complete the DMP on mySNF once the project is approved, regardless of whether a DMP is requested by the foreign partner organization/by the consortium. The DMP covers all research data which are generated or used during the project and has to comply with the SNSF Open Research Data Policy.
