Protected Research Time for Clinicians

More time for your research!

Repealed based on the decision of the Research Council Presiding Board of 8 December 2021 as of 31 December 2024. The last opportunities to submit a grant application for Protected Research Time for Clinicians (PRTC) are: Project funding Biology and Medicine division, call of summer semester 2024; Investigator Initiated Clinical Trials (IICTs) 2023 call.

​The initiative "Protected Research Time for Clinicians" (PRTC) is intended to help especially younger clinicians to dedicate at least 30% of their working time to their research project funded by the SNSF. They will be relieved of their clinical duties during "protected time". The salary costs related to this this guaranteed research time are assumed by the SNSF and the employer in equal parts.

  • Participation requirements

    ​PRTC grants can be applied for by active clinicians at Swiss hospitals who

    • meet the personal requirements for applicants as stipulated in Article 10 of the Funding Regulations and Articles 4 and 5 of the Project Funding Regulations;
    • are the applicant of a research project to be evaluated by the Biology and Medi-cine division;
    • have never received a grant for protected research time;
    • do not already hold a structural position with budget responsibility at a hospital or an academic tenured position.

    Collaborators working for the project are not entitled to apply.

    Submission of proposals

    Applications for a PRTC grant must be submitted to the SNSF together with the project proposal.

    The last opportunities to submit a grant application for Protected Research Time for Clinicians (PRTC) are: Project funding Biology and Medicine division, call of summer semester 2024; Investigator Initiated Clinical Trials (IICTs) 2023 call.

    The application for a PRTC grant must be submitted at the same time as the project application by e-mail to project.ls@snf.chExternal Link Icon. Once the project grant has been awarded, a written agreement between applicant and employer concerning protected research time as well as an overview of the incurred salary costs and their apportionment between the SNSF and the employer. The SNSF's share is paid out as a supplementary grant and therefore does not have to be budgeted in the project application.

    Evaluation process

    Applications for PRTC grants are assessed as part of the project funding evalua-tion by the Biology and Medicine division.
