b) What is the period of eligibility for a SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship?

For applicants with a PhD: the date of the oral PhD defense / viva voce is the crucial date. The period of eligibility, calculated from the submission deadline, extends from 3 years to 8 years after this date (Article 4 paragraph 2 of the Eccellenza Regulations). Due to late communication as well as greater stringency with regard to the maximum limit, it has been decided that submissions will be possible in justified cases until a maximum of 9 years for the first call (plus a further year pursuant to Article 1.11 of the General implementation regulations for the Funding Regulations).

For applicants with an MD: the date specified on the state diploma is the crucial date. The period of eligibility, calculated from the submission deadline, extends from 3 years to 12 years after this date. Please refer to Article 4 paragraph 4 of the Eccellenza Regulations for further details. Due to late communication, it has been decided that Clinical researchers are eligible to submit applications for the first call if they obtained their medical licence ("Staatsexamen") no more than 13 years ago (plus a further year pursuant to Article 1.11 of the General implementation regulations for the Funding Regulations).

The SNSF does not apply any biological age restrictions; however, the applicant’s potential for a permanent position within the scope of a professorship at a higher education institution forms part of the evaluation criteria (Article 13, paragraph 4 of the Eccellenza Regulations).
