Research in the NCCR and major results
The primary goal of the NCCR Co-Me (Computer Aided and Image Guided Medical Interventions) was to establish complementary partnerships between research groups with expertise in image analysis, computer animation, navigation, biomechanics and engineering and to combine them with clinical expertise. The participating researchers produced significant high-profile contributions in many fields of computer assisted and image guided surgery.
Advanced cutting-edge technologies and new high-fidelity surgical tools for training, planning and intraoperative support have been developed. Some of the research highlights were non-invasive brain interventions using focused ultrasound waves for patients with chronic pain, a magnetically steered micro robot for minimally invasive microsurgery and drug deposition inside the eye, virtual environments for training surgeons such as a hysteroscopy simulator or a planning and navigation module for cranio-maxillofacial osteotomies in daily clinical routine application.
