The Era-Net HERA research programme aims to strengthen the humanities at European and national level. In the context of the joint research programme "Uses of the Past", HERA has issued a call for proposals which is open to researchers based in Switzerland till 9 April 2015.

Twenty-one research funding organisations are involved in the Era-Net HERA (humanities in the European Research Area). It supports transnational research cooperations in the humanities in order to enhance their profile at national and European level. The SNSF is participating in HERA as a partner organisation. Within the scope of the joint research programme "Uses of the Past", researchers intend to investigate and analyse pressing societal questions concerning identity, integration, political legitimacy and cultural dynamics. "Uses of the Past" is co-financed by the EU. Research consortia consisting of applicants from at least four of the participating HERA partner countries are eligible for the call. Proposals may be submitted as of now and will be accepted until the call closes on 9 April 2015, 19:00.

In a first step, the submitted proposals will be evaluated by an international review panel. In a second step, research projects with high funding priority will be invited to submit a full proposal by October 2015. The projects, which will run for up to 36 months, are expected to start in summer 2016. The JRP "Uses of the Past" has been granted funding of up to EUR 21 million in total, with individual projects being able to demand up to EUR 1.2 million.

Researchers from the following countries are eligible to participate: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Each partner in a consortium is financed by the research funding organisation of their country. In Switzerland, the funding cap per project is EUR 300,000. Applicants from Switzerland must meet the participation requirements for the SNSF's project funding scheme.
