François Baumgartner is the new deputy director of the Swiss National Science Foundation

The Executive Committee of the Foundation Council has appointed François Baumgartner as deputy director of the SNSF. He will start in his new role on 1 September 2016.

François Baumgartner has a PhD in geophysics, a degree in education studies and a master's degree in public administration; in recent years he has worked at the Federal Statistical Office as deputy director, interim director and head of the division "Health and Social Affairs". From 2007 to 2012, he worked at the general secretariat for the Federal Department of Home Affairs in the capacity of special adviser for education and research as well as statistics and foreign affairs. Prior to this he pursued an academic career in Switzerland, the United States and Denmark, where he taught geosciences as an associate professor.

Aged 50, François Baumgartner will be succeeding Angelika Kalt, who became director of the SNSF on 1 April 2016.
