The following two research councillors were elected as new divisional presidents by the Executive Committee of the Foundation Council at its meeting in early September:
- Ola Söderström, University of Neuchâtel, as president of the Humanities and Social Sciences division and successor to Paul Schubert (University of Geneva); first day in office: 1 January 2017
- Arjen K. Lenstra, EPFL, as president of the Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences division and successor to Harald Brune (EPFL); first day in office: 1 April 2017
