The ERA-NET NORFACE and the Belmont Forum are launching the call "Transformation to Sustainability (T2S)", which will be open to all researchers in Switzerland as of December 2016.

The ERA-NET "New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Co-operation in Europe (NORFACE)" is a pan-European initiative in the field of social sciences, comprising funding organisations from 18 European countries. It supports cross-border research co-operation in the social sciences with the aim of strengthening their profile in these countries and at European level. The SNSF has been a full member of NORFACE since spring 2015. The Belmont Forum is a group of the world's major and emerging funders of global environmental change research. It aims to accelerate delivery of the environmental research needed to remove critical barriers to sustainability by aligning and mobilising international resources.

Three call topics identified

The thematic background for the call is as follows: climate change, environmental degradation and resource pressures have created unprecedented situations for societies worldwide. Conventional knowledge and capacity building to tackle the challenges associated with sustainability have proven inadequate, and a comprehensive and concerted research initiative is needed to boost research on transformations to sustainability that can catalyse new kinds of solutions to environmental and social challenges. Three call topics have been identified:

  • Governance and institutional dimensions of transformations to sustainability
  • Economy and finance of transformations to sustainability
  • Well-being, quality of life, identity, and social and cultural values in relation to transformations to sustainability

Additional information on the planned call in December and the participation requirements can be found on the website of ERA-NET NORFACE.
