Investigator Initiated Clinical Trials (IICT)

The SNSF launches a third call for clinical trials in areas outside the industry focus.

With the special programme Investigator Initiated Clinical Trials (IICT), the SNSF is promoting clinical studies in under-researched areas that do not attract industry interest. The call is limited to prospective, randomised, controlled and multicentric intervention studies.

The submission deadline for proposals is 1 November 2017. Researchers wishing to participate need to submit a letter of intent by 1 September 2017. The SNSF recommends that applicants draft the study protocols in consultation with experts from the Clinical Trial Units or similar institutions.

A data management plan (or DMP) for the lifecyle of the research results is now an integral part of any IICT research proposal. It is drawn up for the long term, showing how the data are produced, collected, documented, published and archived. In addition, the SNSF expects IICT grant holders to allow open access to all of the underlying data of a publication, unless prevented by legislation or ethical rules.

The budget for the IICT call 2017 amounts to 10 million Swiss francs, which is sufficient to support at least four clinical trials. For the time being, further annual calls are envisaged up to and including 2020.
