Sinergia funds 19 interdisciplinary projects
Many scientific questions are best answered when researchers from different disciplines work together to generate synergies. The SNSF is funding 19 new Sinergia projects with a total amount of 40.9 million francs.
By 1 June 2018, the SNSF had received 83 Sinergia applications covering 94 academic disciplines: 23% in the humanities and social sciences, 29% in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering, and 48% in biology and medicine.
Funding for a quarter of all applications
The SNSF has selected 19 projects for funding. This corresponds to a success rate of 23%. The projects will receive grants worth 2.1 million francs on average or 40.9 million francs in total. Most of them will run for four years.
77% of the 65 grant recipients work at a Swiss university or ETH, 8% at another research institution or at a hospital that is not affiliated with a university, 3% at a university of applied sciences and 12% at a university abroad.
Biomarkers and local elites
The selected interdisciplinary collaborations cover a wide range of research topics. One project aims to develop biomarkers that will make it possible to predict the reaction to immunotherapy. Researchers from immunology, radiology and machine learning are working together to this end.
In another project, researchers will investigate how local elites and governance structures in Switzerland have evolved between 1890 and 2020 - and if the changes are associated with the growing transnationalisation of elites in the 20th century, i.e. with social networks that increasingly expand across national borders. The consortium comprises historians, political scientists, sociologists and economists. You will find a list of all the funded projects on the Sinergia website.
42 new projects in 2018
In 2018, a total of 42 new Sinergia projects was approved. Between 2017 and 2020, Sinergia provides funding worth 270 million francs for interdisciplinary research that aims to deliver groundbreaking findings.
