Strengthening the Swiss research community
Since 2001, the Swiss National Science Foundation has contributed around 707 million Swiss francs to the NCCRs, over 35% of their total budgets. In addition, the universities involved contributed 1'079 million Swiss francs to the NCCR budgets. Total external funding for the NCCRs amounted to 223 million Swiss francs between 2001 and 2011.
International recognition
Towards the end of 2011, around 15,500 scientific publications were issued by the NCCRs. Many of these publications appeared in the most eminent international science journals.
Boosting structures
Approximately 900 professors are actively participating in the ongoing 27 NCCRs. All in all, thanks to the NCCRs, 87 new chairs were created or existing chairs refocused to a research area of an NCCR.
Promoting careers within the NCCRs
A total of 83 new assistant professorships were created, and 1,590 junior researchers successfully completed their doctorates within the NCCR doctorate programmes.
Focusing on applications
The NCCRs have entered into 719 ventures with different companies. In addition, NCCR researchers have filed 295 patents and developed 308 prototypes. Furthermore, 103 NCCR projects have been funded by the Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI) and various industry partners. No less than 69 start-up companies have originated from the NCCRs.
