NCCR Quantum Photonics

The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) "Quantum Photonics" conducts basic research and seeks potential applications for quantum physics. The research ranges from the physical description of light and its interaction with matter, to the use of these concepts in information and communication technology. One objective is the development of new laser sources. These are superior to current lasers in terms of wavelength, spectral properties und pulse duration: one example being Quantum Cascade Lasers, which are also being used in NASA's Mars Exploration Program. The NCCR "Quantum Photonics" has generated various spin-off companies and resulted in a strengthening of quantum photonics. When the NCCR "Quantum Photonics" concludes in 2013 the established "Swiss Photonics" platform will serve as the first port of call for science, industry, and the public sector for photonics in Switzerland.
