The NCCR North-South manifests its expertise at the University of Bern

On 19 August 2010 the University of Bern inaugurated the interdisciplinary Centre for Development and Environment (CDE). Key competences contributing to the new centre are the result of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) focusing on «North-South: Research Partnerships for Mitigating Syndromes of Global Change».

In 2001, the NCCR North-South, one of 13 NCCRs created that year, got under way. Since then researchers involved in the project have developed valuable, trandisciplinary approaches to address global challenges generated by the discrepancies between the industrialised «North» and developing countries and emerging markets in the «South».

Firmly entrenched legacy
The NCCR has already led to the creation of the International Graduate School North-South which offers a doctoral programme covering subjects such as global change, innovation and sustainable development.
The newly created Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) ensures that the expertise established by the NCCR North-South will remain firmly entrenched in the Swiss research hub. This is a strong reassertion of support for one of its key research areas on the part of the University of Bern, which has been home to the NCCR until now.
