As part of the Human Frontier Science Program, the SNSF supports interdisciplinary cutting-edge research in the life sciences and promotes international cooperation.

Are you planning an innovative life sciences project? Take advantage of the opportunities offered by the international Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP).

The following countries are members of the Human Frontier Science Program: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus (EU part), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, the USA and the European Union.

Researchers from all countries may participate in research grants and postdoctoral fellowships funded by the HFSP. Certain restrictions apply to applications from non-member countries (see the HFSP website).

Funding for research projects

The HFSP research grants enable international and interdisciplinary research teams to conduct innovative projects. Although these projects entail a certain risk that they may fail, they also promise to deliver considerable knowledge gain. The inclusion of non-biological disciplines fosters new approaches. Some grants are reserved specifically for researchers in the early stages of their independent careers. The funding is provided as a lump sum based on team size (two to four research groups) over three years.

Fellowships

Thanks to HFSP fellowships, researchers in the early stages of their careers can expand their research skills while also working in another country.

  • Long-term fellowships: These enable postdoctoral researchers to carry out potentially pioneering projects. Interdisciplinary and innovative approaches are encouraged.
  • Cross-disciplinary fellowships: Researchers from non-biological disciplines explore fundamental issues in biology.

The annual calls for proposals and the related guidelines can be found on the HFSP website. Applications can also be submitted via the HFSP website.
