Assessing diverse research and its full impact appropriately

A new European initiative aims to further develop research assessment. The SNSF and swissuniversities, the umbrella organisation of the Swiss universities, are participating.

The Agreement on Reforming Research Assessment has been drawn up by a number of education and research organisations across Europe. The document reaffirms basic principles that are key for the SNSF and swissuniversities. For example, research assessment must be based on quality, and freedom of research is essential. In general, the diverse range of research and its full impact should be assessed appropriately. A shift is needed in research culture to make this a reality. Collaboration between different players is vital here, and the new agreement is expected to contribute to this. The signatory organisations are founding a coalition to implement the agreement.
