Research Council of the SNSF: new presidents for two funding divisions

The Executive Committee of the SNSF Foundation Council has elected two new members to the Presiding Board of the Research Council and nine new research councillors.

The following two research councillors were elected as new divisional presidents by the Executive Committee of the Foundation Council at its meeting in early September:

  • Ola Söderström, University of Neuchâtel, as president of the Humanities and Social Sciences division and successor to Paul Schubert (University of Geneva); first day in office: 1 January 2017
  • Arjen K. Lenstra, EPFL, as president of the Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences division and successor to Harald Brune (EPFL); first day in office: 1 April 2017

In addition, the Executive Committee of the Foundation Council has elected the following nine researchers as new members of the National Research Council:

Humanities and Social Sciences division

  • Véronique Dasen, University of Fribourg, in the area of ancient history and classical studies as successor to Paul Schubert (University of Geneva); first day in office: 1 January 2017
  • Danièle Tosato-Rigo, University of Lausanne, in the area of humanities as successor to Jon Mathieu (University of Lucerne); first day in office: 1 January 2017

Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences division

  • Alberto Morpurgo, University of Geneva, in the area of condensed matter physics as successor to Harald Brune (EPFL); first day in office: 1 April 2017
  • Ruth Durrer, University of Geneva, in the area of astrophysics as successor to Simon Lilly (ETH Zurich); first day in office: 1 October 2016
  • Marc Bohner, RMS Foundation, in the area of material sciences as successor to Marco Wieland (senior consultant Altran AG); first day in office: 1 October 2016
  • Bernd Gotsmann, IBM Research, in the area of engineering sciences as successor to Urs Dürig (IBM Research GmbH); first day in office: 1 October 2016

Biology and Medicine division

  • Kaspar Locher, ETH Zurich, in the area of biophysics and structural biology as successor to Stephan Grzesiek (University of Basel); first day in office: 1 October 2016
  • Claudia Kühni, University of Bern, in the area "Clinician with experience in diseases of childhood and adolescence" as successor to Urs Frey (University of Basel); first day in office: 1 October 2016

  • Manfred Max Bergman, University of Basel, in the area of sociology/social psychology as successor to Fabrizio Butera (University of Lausanne); first day in office: 1 January 2017
