Mobility fellowships and Doc.CH as of 2021
In the next funding period, the SNSF will consolidate its career funding schemes. The last two calls for Doc.Mobility and Early Postdoc.Mobility will take place in 2020.
As of 2021, the SNSF will fund the mobility of doctoral students under "mobility grants in projects". This supplementary measure was introduced in 2013 for all SNSF-funded doctoral students. The existing Doc.Mobility scheme will be discontinued at the end of 2020.
Postdoc.Mobility will be continued as the only mobility funding option for postdocs. The Early Postdoc.Mobility scheme will be integrated into Postdoc.Mobility at the end of 2020. The first call of the new Postdoc.Mobility scheme will be launched in autumn 2020. There will be two calls per year.
Last calls in March and September 2020
The penultimate calls of Doc.Mobility and Early Postdoc.Mobility have been launched. Researchers can submit proposals until 1 March 2020. The final submission deadline for these two schemes will be 1 September 2020.
National evaluation of all Doc.CH proposals
The SNSF is also simplifying the Doc.CH funding scheme that finances doctoral theses in Switzerland in the humanities and social sciences. As of 2021, the first-phase selection (preselection) of Doc.CH proposals will take place at a national level and will no longer be the responsibility of the local Research Commissions. The second phase of the evaluation (interviews) will be conducted by the national evaluation bodies of the SNSF as before.
The regulations of Postdoc.Mobility and Doc.CH will be updated by autumn 2020. The relevant information will be available on the SNSF website in due course.
Alternative for doctoral students
As of 2021, there will be an alternative mobility scheme for persons who complete their doctorate without being funded under an SNSF project. The rector's conference of the Swiss universities swissuniversities is in the process of elaborating a new framework programme for this purpose. It will allow the universities to develop and implement replacement schemes for the SNSF Doc.Mobility scheme, which will only run till the end of 2020. As with Doc.Mobility, these new schemes will enable doctoral students to go abroad and immerse themselves into a different research culture.
