Strategic Japanese-Swiss Science and Technology Programme: 4 projects approved

Within the scope of the Strategic Japanese-Swiss Science and Technology Programme (SJSSTP) 38 applications were received by the beginning of June 2016. Four of them were awarded a grant.

The SNSF and its Japanese partner organisation, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), had been requested to collaborate on a call for Joint Research Projects (JRPs) by the State Secretariat for Research, Education and Innovation (SERI). JRPs enable researchers in Switzerland and Japan to work together on a project. Most of the projects will run for three years and the grants of Swiss researchers will cover similar costs as project funding grants (research funds, salaries, etc.).

Joint evaluation

The 38 submitted applications were jointly evaluated by the SNSF and the JSPS. Both organisations nominated international experts as members of the evaluation panel. The 4 projects to be funded concern the following thematic areas:

  • Biology
  • Medicine
  • Humanities
  • Social sciences

The SNSF will cover the costs of approx. CHF 1 million for the Swiss part of the research and the JSPS will finance the research work conducted in Japan.
