The scientific event “Building hope for the future – Celebrating progress in sustainability” on 30 May 2022 concluded with the awarding of the Marie Heim-Vögtlin Prize to Denise Mitrano. Co-organised by the ETH Women Professors Forum and the SNSF, the event was an opportunity for several women speakers to address various aspects of sustainability. Karin Ingold, Ulrike Sturm and Nathalie Casas replied to questions from the audience at a round table moderated by Janet Hering and also attended by Denise Mitrano.

After a presentation of the measures instituted by the SNSF to achieve gender equality in science and an enthusiastic laudatio, Professors Gabriele Rippl and Hubert van den Bergh awarded the 2021 MHV Prize to Denise Mitrano. The prize is deserved recognition for the exceptional work done by Denise Mitrano: according to Professor van den Bergh, it has been a game changer for research into the tracking of micro- and nanoplastic particles. After a fascinating presentation on this research given by Denise Mitrano herself, the event closed with a drinks reception.
