Simplified process for joint research projects with Spain
The SNSF and the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) are strengthening cooperation between the Swiss and Spanish scientific communities. Two calls inspired by the Weave model will enable teams to submit joint proposals.
The call format is inspired by Weave, a European initiative that aims to simplify the submission and evaluation of collaborative research projects involving researchers from different European countries. Researchers in Switzerland and Spain can submit a joint proposal to one of the two funding organisations. Each project must be built around a shared research question and a joint research plan. The work in the two countries must form one coherent project.
Part of Project Funding
The Weave process is part of the SNSF’s Project Funding scheme. There is no additional budget, and the usual national eligibility and funding requirements apply. Researchers may only submit a proposal if there are no thematic overlaps with other proposals or ongoing projects. Each agency will fund its own national beneficiaries through its respective national funding schemes and calls.
Submission in November 2026
For the call in 2026, the AEI will act as the lead agency. Applicants must submit their Spanish-Swiss proposal to the AEI’s PID2026 call by 24 November 2026. The lead agency is responsible for organising the scientific evaluation, the results of which are recognised by both funding organisations. In parallel, the Swiss research group should submit a copy of the same proposal to the SNSF via the mySNF platform within seven days of the AEI deadline.
The SNSF and the AEI have agreed to alternate in the role of lead agency. Following the call led by the AEI in 2026, the SNSF will take the lead for the call with the submission deadline of 1 October 2027. For the latter, Swiss applicants should submit the joint Swiss-Spanish proposal to the SNSF under the Project Funding scheme, and Spanish applicants should submit a copy of the proposal to the AEI.
