Guidelines: "How do I apply for Flexibility Grants or mobility grants?"

Would you like to apply for a Flexibility Grant or a mobility grant as part of an ongoing research project? These guidelines explain how to enter and submit your proposal via the SNSF Portal.

Through these measures, the SNSF supports researchers with specific needs during an ongoing research project:

  • Flexibility Grants support doctoral researchers, regardless of their level of employment, and postdoctoral researchers with a work-time percentage of at least 80 percent, in balancing family and work commitments.

  • Mobility grants support doctoral researchers during a research stay abroad.

Submitting a proposal via the SNSF Portal

The SNSF is gradually replacing the mySNF online platform with the SNSF Portal. If your research project is already registered on the SNSF Portal, please enter and submit proposals for Flexibility Grants and mobility grants directly there.

To submit such a proposal, you will need:

  • an SNSF Portal account

  • an invitation to become a member of the project’s research team

  • fully completed employment details on the SNSF Portal

Doctoral researchers may apply for one mobility grant per research project. Doctoral or postdoctoral researchers may apply for Flexibility Grants on multiple occasions. If there is already a proposal with the status "In preparation", you must first submit or delete it before you can create another proposal.

  • Under "Grants", open the project for which you wish to apply for a Flexibility Grant or a mobility grant.

Go to the "Team" section and click on your name. This link is only visible next to your own name. As a prerequisite, you must have been invited to join the project as a member of the research team.

The next step is filling in your employment details. These must be fully completed before you can submit a proposal. Under "Supplementary Grants", you can apply for a Flexibility Grant or a mobility grant for your research project, provided you meet the relevant criteria.

Complete the individual sections in accordance with the instructions on the SNSF Portal. When applying for a Flexibility Grant, please check your personal details first and fill in any missing information. Once all sections show a yellow or green status, you can submit the proposal.

  • Under your employment details, you will find an overview of all requested measures and their current status. Once the SNSF has reached a decision on your proposal, you will also find the relevant ruling regarding the approval or rejection of your proposal there. This ruling is not sent to the grant recipient, but instead to the main contact of the ongoing project.
