Biodiversa+: Call opening

Biodiversa+ is launching a new call for projects on nature-based solutions. Swiss-based researchers can participate.

Nature-based solutions are defined as actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously contributing to human well-being, ecosystem services and resilience, and biodiversity benefits.

This call aims at supporting research on biodiversity to gain a better understanding of the tipping points, trade-offs and underlying mechanisms affecting nature-based solutions, and their successful implementation with respect to the benefits for nature, human well-being and societal transformation.

To this end, it covers the following three, non-exclusive research themes:

  • Synergies and trade-offs of nature-based solutions in the context of human well-being
  • Nature-based solutions mitigating anthropogenic drivers of biodiversity loss
  • The contribution of nature-based solutions for just transformative change

The call will cover transnational, interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and cross-sectoral research on nature-based solutions in all parts of the world. All realms, i.e. terrestrial, marine, coastal and freshwater are eligible.

Supported by the SNSF

An international panel will scientifically evaluate the pre-proposals and full proposals. With the exception of self-financed partners, partners in a consortium are supported by a funding agency from their country or region. Swiss-based investigators applying for financial support from the SNSF to participate in a call must be eligible for the SNSF project funding scheme. Alongside the application to Biodiversa+, they need to submit an administrative application to the SNSF by the same submission deadline. Investigators are strongly encouraged to contact the SNSF Administrative Offices if they are submitting their first application to the SNSF. Further specifications for participation in the calls are outlined in the Funding Organisation Rules published on the Biodiversa+ website.

The submission deadline for pre-proposals is 10 November 2023.

In parallel to this call, the Water4All partnership is also launching a call for projects. While the Biodiversa+ call aims at gaining a better understanding of the tipping points, trade-offs and socio-ecological mechanisms affecting nature-based solutions in all realms, the Water4All call focuses on understanding the status of aquatic ecosystems services at varying temporal and spatial scales. Both calls are hence complementary and target different research questions. Participation in both calls is permitted with different projects and within the conditions set by the SNSF regulations.

For information: a new National Research Programme on biodiversity and ecosystem services (NRP 82) will launch a call for proposals in December 2023. Due to the thematic proximity, we invite the applicants to the Biodiversa+ call to stay informed.
