Funding of 40 new SNSF professorships
In February 2014, the SNSF granted 40 new SNSF professorships to outstanding young researchers. They will take up their posts at seven Swiss universities and both federal institutes of technology. Twelve grantees are returning to Switzerland after a period abroad.
The average funding they will receive is CHF 1.45 million per professorship over a four-year period, which is sufficient for them to recruit teams and set up their own projects. Thirty per cent of the grantees are researchers returning to Switzerland after a period spent working abroad. The share of women scientists who received an SNSF professorship in 2014 is 45%. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous years (2013: 23%).
The 40 SNSF professorships are distributed as follows: University of Bern 3, University of Basel 5, University of Fribourg 6, University of Geneva 3, University of Lausanne 6, University of Lucerne 2, University of Zurich 10, EPF Lausanne 1, ETH Zurich 4.
In accordance with funding conditions that were introduced in 2009, the SNSF also awarded an SNSF professorship in a clinically oriented area. The SNSF professors in clinically oriented areas (in total 17 awards since 2010) benefit from optimum working conditions tailored to their needs.
The SNSF has awarded a total of 569 SNSF professorships since 1999. Eighty per cent of the recipients between 2000 and 2008 have since gained a permanent professorship.
