In November 2024, the SNSF approved the PROMYS projects of three early-career researchers aspiring to become assistant professors in Bulgaria. The five-year grants amount to 625,000 Swiss francs each.

PROMYS provides talented early-career researchers with an excellent research opportunity in Bulgaria to continue their academic careers. This initiative aims to counter the brain-drain tendencies Bulgaria is confronted with and offers a new impetus to effectively help create a cluster effect, generating long-term benefits for Bulgaria and its research community.

As a co-funder of the PROMYS programme, the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science has decided to finance three additional PROMYS projects that could not be supported under the second Swiss contribution due to a lack of funds. This decision highlights Bulgaria’s interest in supporting talented researchers and underscores the high level of competition within the PROMYS call for proposals.

PROMYS is one of three funding programmes offered by the SNSF as part of the second Swiss contribution to selected EU member states. Through this initiative, Switzerland is contributing to EU enlargement by supporting efforts to reduce economic and social disparities. This serves as an expression of solidarity and consolidates the basis for stable economic and political relations with the EU and its member states.
