OA monitoring 2023: high level maintained and CC licences becoming more widespread

More than three quarters of publications resulting from SNSF-funded research are open access. Machine-readable Creative Commons licences set out the terms of use in detail.

The results of publicly funded research are a public good. All interested parties should be able to use these findings free of charge and without restriction. In 2023, SNSF-funded research projects produced 16,299 publications – almost 600 more than in the previous year. Of these, 78% were open access (OA), slightly down from 81% in 2022.

Summarising the development over several years, it is clear that the share of OA publications rose sharply between 2013 and 2020. Since 2021, it has stabilised at a consistently high level, with minor fluctuations of a few percentage points, which are normal and to be expected.

The SNSF’s OA strategy and the efforts by higher education institutions are having a lasting impact and have played a key part in establishing open access to scientific publications as standard. This advances research and allows actors from business and society to make full and rapid use of new insights.
