50 years of SNSF data: a story of growth, challenges and impact

The data presented in this story show the key role that the SNSF has played in research funding in Switzerland over the past 50 years.
The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) was founded in 1952 with the mandate from the Swiss Confederation to support scientific research. Since 1975, the SNSF has digitised its data on research funding in Switzerland. This resource is accessible to the public and is the basis of our analysis in this data story.
The SNSF does not only collect data for statistical purposes. They serve as a strategic tool for developing funding measures and optimising internal processes. They also create transparency. Electronic data entry has been developed and professionalised over the last decades. It now helps guide our strategic decisions and allows us to act flexibly.
On the occasion of this anniversary, we want to make our data more visible because they tell a story – one of growth, change and impact as well as one of the people whom these numbers represent.
