Early-career researchers

With funding schemes aimed at emerging talent, you have the opportunity to work abroad, pursue your own project, or manage your own research team.

Promoting the development of early-career researchers is a key priority for the SNSF. Its activities complement those of the higher education institutions and open more career opportunities to new talent.

The SNSF offers funding schemes at various career levels for doctorate and medical degree graduates. These funding schemes are open to all researchers with links to Switzerland, including those from abroad in the case of Ambizione, as well as all research disciplines and topics. Applications may be submitted once or multiple times a year.

  • Postdoc.Mobility fellowships are aimed at researchers who have completed a doctorate and wish to conduct a research stay abroad.

  • Ambizione grants are aimed at early-career researchers who wish to conduct, manage and lead an independent project at a Swiss higher education institution.

  • SNSF Starting Grants enable researchers to carry out their own independent project and lead a research team in Switzerland.

The SNSF also supports early-career researchers indirectly as staff (PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and other employees) involved in SNSF-funded projects. This provides researchers with the opportunity to engage in high-level research early in their careers.

Research funding must take into account the actual living conditions of researchers today. For this reason, the SNSF is continuously developing its funding schemes.
