SNSF open data: how to combine datasets to explore the diversity of research outputs

To facilitate the analysis of its funding activities, the SNSF provides data freely. This data story demonstrates how to combine SNSF datasets, in this case to identify the share of grants with different types of research output.
The SNSF is committed to informing the public about its funding activities. To achieve this goal, we publish open data on our Data Portal that is accessible to all. This story is part of a series aimed at helping users better understand how to use our open data. We hope that this tutorial will empower users of SNSF open data to explore new ideas related to analysing research funding in Switzerland.
In this second part of our open data series, we will explain how to read and combine SNSF datasets, using the R programming language and packages from the tidyverse. Binding the “Grants” and “Output Data” datasets together will allow us to create a figure that highlights the diversity of the research outputs produced by SNSF-funded grants. Through measures such as signing the DORA declaration and implementing a narrative CV, the SNSF is at the forefront of efforts to valorise the quality of research output as a whole rather than the traditional metrics of journal impact factors and publication lists.
