Launch your own research project as an assistant professor with your team.
SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowships are aimed at highly qualified researchers who aspire to a permanent professorship. Eccellenza supports them in achieving their goal by allowing them to lead a generously funded research project as an assistant professor with their team at a Swiss higher education institution.
Eccellenza covers the grantee's salary at the local rates applicable to assistant professorships and project funds of up to 1,000,000 Swiss francs for a five-year period.
The main participation requirements are listed below. Please consult the Eccellenza Regulations to determine your formal eligibility.
Applicants must have a proven record of at least two years' research activity at a Swiss higher education research centre, or they must be Swiss nationals or have a Swiss higher education degree. They have never held a professorship position nor is such a position foreseen.
- have a doctorate (PhD) or at least three years of research activity after obtaining their higher education degree (equivalent qualification to a doctorate).
- have acquired at least three years of research experience after their doctorate or equivalent qualification to a doctorate.
- submit their application up to eight years after their PhD defense or after the date of the equivalent qualification to a doctorate.
Researchers who do clinical work:
- have a medical exam (state examination or equivalent).
- have acquired at least three years of clinical work and at least 2 years of research activities after their medical exam.
- submit their application up to 12 years after their medical exam.
The time periods are calculated on the basis of the relevant submission deadline for Eccellenza applications.
Submission of proposals
Applications must be submitted via the mySNF platform. The mySNF platform will be opened for submission three months before the respective application deadline.

Members of the evaluation bodies
The list contains the names of the members of evaluation bodies. For the SNSF, interaction between applicants and members of evaluation bodies over applications is not compatible with academic best practices.
a. Where can I find detailed information and guidelines on how to submit an application?
Detailed information can be found in the guidelines for submitting a proposal (see section Documents).
b. I am currently benefiting from an ongoing Ambizione grant. May I still apply for Eccellenza?
Ambizione grantees may apply for an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship 18 months after starting their Ambizione grant at the earliest.
c. Does my current position at university affect my eligibility for an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship?
Researchers who submit applications for SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowships must not have held, currently hold, or have been assured of, a temporary or permanent assistant professorship or professorship position, whether in Switzerland or abroad, at the time of the submission deadline or during the evaluation procedure. Positions that do not allow submission are characterized as follows: temporary or permanent member of teaching staff with independent position involving independent research and teaching duties/activities not bound by instructions, right to supervise doctoral theses. For applicants from abroad, the title of the position may differ from the titles used in Switzerland (assistant professor, professor). Please contact the SNSF administrative offices in case of doubt.
d. Is it possible to extend the period of eligibility in case of special circumstances?
The period of eligibility may be extended if the applicant experienced a delay according to the reasons listed in paragraph 1.11 of the General implementation regulations for the Funding Regulations
e. Can I use the Net academic age for calculating the eligibility window?
No, these two are not to be used synonymously. The personal requirements are stipulated by Article 4 of the Eccellenza Regulations (PDF). The Net academic age indicates how much time you could devote to research since your relevant degree. This is taken into account in the evaluation.
f. What may I enter in the Statement of mobility and the calculation of the Net academic age?
Please refer to the guidelines and the corresponding forms. You are expected to present your past and planned mobility (Statement of Mobility) and how much time you could devote to research since your relevant degree (Net academic age). You can decide for yourself what you consider relevant here. The content of the documents will eventually form part of the evaluation.
g. Can I continue my current project grant if I obtain an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship?
You can continue if its research topic is clearly different from that of the SNSF Eccellenza application.
h. Is there a limitation for repeated submissions?
Applicants whose application for an SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship has been rejected may submit an application once more.
i. Can I have an Eccellenza and an ERC application under evaluation at the same time?
Yes. However, you will be asked to inform the SNSF about the extent to which the proposed project overlaps with the project you applied for at the ERC. You are also obliged to inform the SNSF as soon as the outcome of your application to the ERC is known. When awarding an Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship, the SNSF takes into account any significant third party funding acquired for the same or for a strongly overlapping research project, such as an ERC grant. In such cases, the funding awarded by the SNSF is limited to the salary (according to article 9, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Eccellenza regulations (PDF).
j. I have an interdisciplinary project that I cannot easily categorize into one research field and a main and sub-discipline(s) on mySNF. What do I need to consider?
The interdisciplinary character of your proposal will be taken into account during the evaluation. Depending on the choice of research field, your proposal will be evaluated in one of the following three research domains: Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Natural and Engineering Sciences and Biology and Medicine. If your project is situated at the intersection between these domains, you should go to “Basic data I” on mySNF and choose the research field according to where you primarily want the proposal to be evaluated. The main referee will then be assigned from the selected research field, while the co-referees may be assigned from the further research field(s).
k. In which Swiss research institutions can I conduct my SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship?
All publicly funded research institutions in Switzerland are eligible, i.e. universities, university hospitals, universities of applied sciences, universities of teacher education, research centres (e.g., PSI, EMPA, EAWAG) or institutes of postgraduate education (e.g., IDIAP, IHEID). However, an Eccellenza grantee must be employed at a Swiss higher education institution that is accredited (see list).
l. Can I submit an Eccellenza application if I have already applied for an ERC Starting Grant?
An application for an ERC Starting Grant does not prevent you from submitting an Eccellenza application. However, the Eccellenza application must indicate the extent to which the proposed project overlaps with the project applied for at the ERC. Candidates are also obliged to inform the SNSF as soon as the outcome of their application to the ERC is known. When awarding an Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship, the SNSF takes into account any significant third-party funding acquired for the same or for a strongly overlapping research project, such as an ERC grant. In such cases, the funding awarded by the SNSF is limited to the salary (according to article 9, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Eccellenza regulations).
